CTR Carinthian Tech Research AG

CTR is an industry-oriented R&D centre for smart sensors and intelligent sensor systems. Focussing on system technologies and solutions, CTR’s expertise serves science and industry at both national and international level. CTR is furthermore host to the COMET centre ASSIC, the Austrian Smart Systems Integration Research Center.

CTR is a non-universitary R&D centre with RTI foci on Advanced Sensor Systems and Technologies, on Smart System Integration and on Renewable Energy Systems. As an industry-oriented R&D service provider, CTR conducts both fundamental research and application-oriented development for and with its customers. Following this strategy, CTR’s team has achieved a number of internationally acclaimed innovations, like thin-wafer grippers, high-temperature wireless sensors systems or a solid-state laser spark plug, and established an extensive network of academic and industrial partners.

Supplementary to its scientific competences and R&D infrastructure, the centre has extensive experience in conducting and managing R&D projects, from small(er) bilateral projects to large-scale multi-partner projects, both on the national (e.g. within COMET Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies Program) and the international level (e.g. Horizon 2020 or ENIAC JU).

Role and Key Contribution
  • Sensor technology know-how: optical sensors, magnetic sensors, acoustic transducers, Nano-Electro-Mechanical, Micro-Electro-Mechanical and Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS/MOEMS), process technologies, passive & wireless sensor systems, sensors for harsh environments (SAW technology), sensors for smart energy systems
  • Strategic R&D focus on excellent research in the field of “Smart System Integration”: microsystem technologies, heterogeneous integration, packaging technologies, systems integration, miniaturised measurement systems (COMET K1 Center ASSIC).
  • Comprehensive R&D infrastructure, including dedicated high-end MEMS component characterisation tools and reference metrology; a dedicated R&D cleanroom is currently under construction.
