Modern devices, vehicles and industrial processes require an increasing amount of synergetic interaction of mechanic, electric and electronic components. The Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics conducts cutting edge research into analysis, synthesis and control of complex mechatronic systems.
The analysis, synthesis and control of complex mechatronic systems require the bundling of several state-of-the-art engineering techniques. The research groups at the Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics cover all relevant disciplines in the field of mechatronics at the highest level:
- mechanics of solid bodies
- technical dynamics and vehicle system dynamics
- measurement and actuator technology
- control and process automation
The institute is continuously engaged in numerous projects, both nationally and on the international level, including the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Innovative Control and Monitoring of Automotive Powertrain Systems. Research is conducted into theoretical foundations as well as in state-of-the-art equipped laboratories.
Role and Key Contribution
- Advanced control of multiphysical systems: HVAC for buildings and vehicles, Hardware in the loop emulation of complex dynamical systems (e.g. Pantograph/catenary interaction);
- Control and system identification in the process industry: System identification of distributed systems (e.g. structural vibrations), online optimisation of nonlinear and complex plants;
- Analysis and control of traffic networks: Online identification of dynamic traffic models, optimisation of traffic flow in distributed/interconnected road networks;
- Diagnosis and control of automotive powertrain systems: online monitoring of batteries and fuel cells, ageing prediction models, advanced nonlinear and predictive control systems for alternative and connected powertrains.
